Our Story
My journey to a career in music education started—really started—the day in middle school I told my mother I wanted to quit taking piano lessons.
I had a wonderful teacher, Mrs. H, a caring and warm woman who took time to get to know me and my musical interests starting from my very first lesson. I begged my parents for piano lessons at 7 years old, and Mrs. H didn’t blink an eye when I told her I wanted to supplement all my technique and lesson books with a New Kids on the Block Easy Piano book. (And YES, I still have it!)
But by middle school my attention had drifted off, and like many kids that age I started to wonder if music was right for me. I loved playing, but practice sessions had grown longer and my attention span had grown shorter. However, Mrs. H had many years of experience, and she had taught many, many kids. In fact, she had taught my mother when she was a little girl!
Mrs H saw something special in me that she wasn’t ready to watch walk away. She sat out on her front porch one warm spring South Carolina afternoon and told my mom, “Don’t let Kim quit. Even if she’s taking a break from practice, she’s still learning. Keep her moving forward.” Mrs. H believed I had a gift and a passion. She wanted to help me see it through.
And by the time I reached high school, I was all in! I was accompanying our high school concert choir, memorizing the lyrics to RENT, and pouring over course catalogs for colleges and universities with music education programs. I wanted to be a choral director ... and an accompanist, and a performer, and a musical theater director!
Most of all, I wanted to be a music teacher. Thank you, Mrs. H.
Harmony Music Studios was born out of a love for the musical journey and for the love we have for teachers who inspired us along the way. I am thrilled for the chance to pass along these experiences to the next generation of musicians.
